How do you use nesting material for your rat?
Rats like to sleep in a house, a sputnik or a hammock. They are crazy about soft sleeping places, so give the animals enough 'sleeping material', as we call it. A little toilet paper can make many a rat very happy, they immediately take it to their house or hammock. Because toilet paper quickly starts to smell, we have made a selection of nesting material in this category that is very suitable for rats.
Which nesting material to use when?
Nesting material is a broad term, because cushions and baskets also fall under this. Cushions and baskets are also self-contained, they do not need any further filling, because they are nice and soft by themselves.
Nesting material in the form of litter/ground covering such as mini hemp nesting material, cotton or paper shavings bedding are ideal for a house that is placed on the floor of the enclosure. Rats take this ground covering with them to the house, where they can build a cozy nest with it. Nesting material in the form of litter is less suitable for a plateau or in a hanging house, because it easily falls down.
Mats come in different types, sizes, colours and materials. Mats are ideal as a ground cover or as a layer on a plateau. The hemp mat, for example, is a disposable mat that must be replaced with a new one after a while. Mats made of fleece material can be washed and reused. The hemp mat in particular is a special mat for Rats. It is often picked apart by the Rats and taken to the sleeping house; a real 'sleeping material'. When placing a mat on the ground or on the plateau, soft nesting material is still needed for extra padding in the house or sleeping place.
Coconut can be used as ground cover and nesting material. Coconut is low in dust and very absorbent. It holds moisture and odors firmly. Coconut is also one of the 'dragging materials': The rats will happily get to work with the fibers of the coconut.
Blankets are also very nice as nesting material for the rats. They will like to hide in it and drag it around. An advantage of a blanket is that it can be reused.
Plush tunnels are also great to sleep in. Nice and soft and warm during colder days. A big advantage is that multiple rats can lie in the tunnel and the ventilation remains good due to the two open sides!
Because rats have very sensitive airways it is important that they do not get dusty nesting materials. Dust can irritate the airways and in very sensitive animals even cause serious health problems.
