Do Hamsters and Dwarf Hamsters Need an Exercise Wheel?
A hamster or dwarf hamster needs a running wheel. Research has even shown that the animals become much happier and stay healthier. Hamsters are naturally active animals and like to get rid of their energy. If they have too little space or too little to do in the cage, they can start to show neurotic behavior or problem behavior such as biting or gnawing on bars.
Why does a hamster need an exercise wheel?
A hamster is naturally an active animal that travels great distances at night. An exercise wheel offers a safe way to fulfill this need for exercise in a cage or enclosure. It prevents boredom and contributes to a healthy weight and behavior.
What size exercise wheel is right for my hamster?
For Syrian hamsters (golden hamsters) we recommend a wheel with a minimum diameter of 28 cm . For dwarf hamsters 20 cm or larger is best. This prevents back problems and a crooked back while running.
Which size exercise wheel is suitable for which hamster species?
Different hamster species require different exercise wheels. A wheel that is good for one hamster may be too small or too big for another. Below we have listed the different hamster species and the size of exercise wheel they need for your convenience.

Is an exercise wheel suitable for all hamsters?
Almost all hamsters like to use a wheel, as long as it meets the right conditions. Syrian hamsters, Russian dwarf hamsters, Campbell's and Roborovski's make a lot of use of them. Please note: with older or sick hamsters, the use may be limited.
What is the best material for a hamster wheel?
Wood, Metal, Plastic? For the hamster it often doesn't matter what material the wheel is made of, he is happy to be able to run! A nice side effect of a wooden wheel is that the nails wear better than in a metal or plastic wheel.
What should I pay attention to when buying a hamster wheel?
- Closed tread: for a secure grip and to protect paws.
- Back-friendly design: no curvature when walking.
- Silent operation: hamsters often run at night.
- Sturdy base or wall mounting.
What is better: a wooden or plastic running wheel?
Both materials have their advantages and disadvantages:
- Wooden running wheels are natural and quiet, but can be more difficult to clean.
- Plastic running wheels are more hygienic and easy to remove. Make sure they have a closed running surface and are stable.
How do you clean wooden running wheels?
It used to be a challenge to clean a wooden exercise wheel, but fortunately that is a thing of the past. Nowadays, there are two types of cleaning products that can be used to easily clean wooden exercise wheels. The first product is CSI Urine Spray and the second is Eco Pets Urine Buster. Both cleaning products work on an enzyme basis and tackle the bacteria that are in urine. These bacteria are responsible for the well-known urine smell. Both sprays remove the bacteria and dirt so that the exercise wheel is fresh and clean again.
Can you wash a hamster or dwarf hamster's running wheel in water?
For all running wheels it is not good to rinse them completely under the tap. It is very important that the turning mechanism (ball bearing) does not get wet. The more often the turning mechanism is rinsed the stiffer it becomes and can therefore start to squeak and run stiffer.
We do not recommend washing wooden running wheels with water. Wiping them with a damp cloth is no problem, but it is not good for the running wheels to get them completely wet. Getting the running wheel wet can cause the glue to come loose.
What to do when a hamster's or dwarf hamster's running wheel squeaks?
A running wheel can make more noise over time. For a squeaky running wheel, we recommend a drop of olive oil. This can be applied to the turning mechanism.
My hamster won't use the wheel, why is that?
Some hamsters need to get used to a new wheel. Make sure the wheel is stable and big enough. Also check if your hamster is not sick or has pain (feet). A wheel with open bars or too small size is often avoided.
Can a hamster become addicted to the wheel?
Some hamsters run excessively. As long as the behavior does not seem compulsive or is accompanied by weight loss, this is normal. Sufficient distraction and variation in the enclosure help to achieve a good balance.
