Hamster Bedding: The Best Choice for a Natural Habitat

A good substrate is essential for the well-being of your hamster. Hamsters and dwarf hamsters are natural diggers and like to create tunnels in their habitat. A deep layer of substrate makes this possible and helps your hamster to display natural behaviour. At DRD Rodent Shop® you will find the largest selection of substrates in Europe, including cotton, paper, wood fibres, flax, hemp, spelt litter and barley litter.

Which substrate is suitable for hamsters?

The right bedding should not only be absorbent and dust-free, but also sturdy enough to dig tunnels in. Popular choices include:

  • Paper and Cotton Litter: Soft, dust-free and comfortable for sensitive paws.
  • Wood fibre and flax: Natural and absorbent options with a fine structure.
  • Spelt and Barley Bedding: Lightweight bedding that mixes well with other types.
  • Mixes: Special combinations of different materials for optimum strength and digging pleasure.

Hamsterscaping & Bioactive Ground Covering

Hamsterscaping is the trend to create a natural and playful living environment. Different ground covers are combined to create height differences, tunnels and soft landing spots. For a bioactive design you can use ground covers such as humus and coconut fibre , in which real plants grow and small cleaning animals keep the ecosystem in balance.

How Much Bedding Does a Hamster Need?

We recommend a minimum layer of 20cm for dwarf hamsters and 30cm for Syrian hamsters (Golden hamsters). This allows them to dig tunnels and feel safe in their enclosure.

Ground Covering & Hamsterscaping

Hamsterscaping allows the animals to show their natural behavior. With Hamsterscaping, the enclosure is set up in an animal-friendly, but very extensive way so that the animals can dig, investigate and just be hamsters! We recommend giving the animals a layer of at least 20 cm. 30 cm would be even more fun for Syrian Hamsters (Golden Hamsters).

Bioactive ground cover

We distinguish two types of ground cover when it comes to scapen, namely the normal scape and the bioactive scape or a combination of both. The bioactive ground cover makes it possible to plant fresh plants and not only provides a living environment for hamsters, but also for small bioactive animals that maintain the environment in the enclosure. We must immediately say that a bioactive design is really for advanced users because of the challenges and subtle natural balance. The small animals, for example, that live in a bioactive enclosure help to clean up poop and pee and the poop and pee of the animals are fertilizers for the plants. In this way, an enclosure almost never has to be cleaned.

The biggest challenge with a bioactive enclosure is the humidity. If the humidity is too high, the parts of the enclosure can start to mold, so we always recommend painting them with a safe clear varnish .

A good bioactive ground cover is for example the Organic Humus and the Coconut Fiber, these two mixed together provide a beautiful substrate for plants and grass and make it possible to dig natural tunnels.

Combine ground covers!

It can help to combine ground covers with each other. This way the ground cover gets more volume and the animals can dig in it even better. Some ground covers such as Cotton & Wood Fiber and Cotton & Hemp are already pre-mixed, but others such as wood fiber should be mixed with hay for example so that they get more firmness.
