Hamsters and dwarf hamsters love fruit, both fresh and dried fruit are loved by the animals. In this category we have put together a selection of fruits for hamsters that are really tasty. Fruit should be given as a snack, not as a standard diet.

Diabetes and fruits
Hamsters with a genetic predisposition to diabetes should only be given fruit to a very limited extent. Hamsters with diabetes should never be given fruit.

Dried fruit can be given as a snack. Dried fruit can be a very good boost for young, pregnant and weak animals. Dried fruit, such as apple cubes, can be used very well as a reward or as a surprise in the foraging bed.

Is dried fruit better than fresh fruit?

A major advantage of dried fruit is its low moisture content. Due to a high moisture content such as in fresh fruit, the animals can get diarrhea. This is not the case with vegetables, for example, but it is with fruit. The animals like fruit so much that they tend to eat more of it and therefore (in the case of fresh fruit) ingest too much fluid. Therefore, dried fruit is better to give.
