How big should a hamster's enclosure be?

Well, space is key! It is always better to have a slightly larger enclosure than one that is too small. With all our cages you will find specific information about which hamster species is suitable for the cage in question. If we indicate "Hamster", then the cage is suitable for both dwarf hamsters and Syrian hamsters (also known as golden hamsters). As a guideline, we recommend a minimum size of 70 x 50 cm for dwarf hamsters and 100 x 50 cm for Syrian hamsters (source: LICG). But remember, bigger is always better for the animals' well-being!

For dwarf hamsters this amounts to a floor area of at least 3500 cm² (70 x 50 cm) and for Syrian hamsters a floor area of at least 5000 cm² (100 x 50 cm) . These are guidelines, but the ground surface is essential. The enclosure can therefore vary in dimensions as long as the ground surface meets the recommended dimensions.

And let's not forget the height of the ground cover!

We recommend having a soil layer of at least 20 cm, so that the hamster can fully dig and express its natural digging behavior. It's a joy to watch them hide under ground cover and dig tunnels like little adventurers!

1. Air grille at the top

2. Protected Grille at the Front

At the front of the terrarium there is another grille that also covers the entire length. This grille acts as the intake point for fresh air from outside the terrarium. What is essential here is that this grille is protected with a gnaw-resistant profile, so your pets cannot damage it.

3. Natural Convection

The ventilation system uses the principle of natural convection. This means that warm air rises while cold air sinks. This phenomenon is known as thermosiphon. The warm air in the terrarium rises to the top grille at the top of the terrarium.

4. Air circulation

Thanks to this natural thermosiphon circulation principle, continuous air circulation is created. This means that the warm, used air in the terrarium is exhausted through the top grille, while fresh air from outside is drawn in through the low, gnaw-resistant grille at the front.
