In the wild, guinea pigs walk on soft surfaces. Their feet are therefore not made for hard ground covers. The guinea pig's feet can be damaged by hard ground covers, but also by a damp surface. Guinea pigs also do not tolerate dust well. The animals' airways can be irritated by dusty ground covers. It is therefore important that the ground cover for guinea pigs meets the following requirements:
✔ absorbs well✔ is dust-free✔ is soft for the paws
Guinea Pig Bedding should be well absorbent
One of the most important criteria that the ideal bedding must meet is excellent absorption. A good bedding absorbs moisture effectively, resulting in a dry and comfortable living environment for your Guinea Pigs. At DRD Rodent Shop® we offer a range of bedding options that are specifically designed to meet this need. Whether it is hay, sawdust or other high-quality materials, our Cavia Webshop has everything you need to create a comfortable home for your little friends.
Guinea pig bedding must be dust-free
Another essential aspect when choosing the right bedding is avoiding dust. Guinea pigs are sensitive to dust, and exposure can lead to irritation of their respiratory tract. A dust-free bedding is therefore essential to ensure the health of your Guinea pigs. In our Guinea Pig Webshop you will find a selection of dust-free bedding that has been specially designed with the well-being of your rodents in mind.
The ground cover should be soft for the paws
In addition, it is important that the substrate is soft for the paws of your guinea pigs. A soft surface prevents paw problems and offers extra comfort to these curious and playful animals. At DRD Rodent Shop ® we understand the importance of softness, which is why you will find various options in our Cavia Webshop that meet this requirement. From natural fibers to special soft materials, we have the ideal substrate for your guinea pigs.
How high should be the bedding for guinea pigs?
But how do you determine the ideal height of the substrate for your guinea pigs? It is advisable to offer a layer of substrate of at least a few centimetres. This allows your guinea pigs to dig and tunnel naturally, which stimulates their natural behaviour. In addition, a sufficiently deep layer offers protection and insulation, making your guinea pigs feel safe and secure.
Does the entire Guinea Pig enclosure need to be filled with bedding?
For guinea pigs, it is possible to choose to fill the entire enclosure with a ground cover, but increasingly, guinea pigs are only given a cover in the form of a hemp mat. Guinea pigs can also be made very clean. The best place to place the toilet is near the hay rack.
What is the best bedding for guinea pigs?
The best bedding for guinea pigs is:
- Gentle on the paws (prevents wounds or pressure points)
- Low dust (for sensitive airways)
- Good absorbency (keeps the cage dry and fresh)
Popular choices include:
- Cotton (soft and airy)
- Cotton N Fibre (airy with strong absorption)
- Card N Card Mix (sustainable & affordable)
- Cotton N Pellets for the toilet super absorbent
How often should I change my guinea pig's bedding?
This depends on the type of substrate and the number of guinea pigs:
- Daily : remove manure and urine spots (spot cleaning)
- Complete replacement : on average 1–2 times per week
If you use a litter box with pellets , you will not have to completely clean the enclosure as often.
Can I use fleece instead of bedding?
Fleece is sometimes used, but:
- It requires daily cleaning
- It must be washed often at high temperatures
- It is less absorbent than ground cover
Many people combine fleece with, for example, pellets in a toilet tank , or opt for organic ground cover for reasons of convenience and hygiene.
Can I use straw or hay as bedding for my Guinea Pig?
- Straw is too hard and not absorbent. Not recommended.
- Hay is essential for feed and scratching, but not for bedding .
Always place bedding under the hay , such as Cotton N Cotton, so that your guinea pigs can lie warm, dry and comfortably.
Which bedding is dust-free for guinea pigs with sensitive respiratory tracts?
Guinea pigs can be bothered by dust. Therefore choose:
- Cotton N Pellets
- Back 2 Nature
- Wood N Alder
- Card N Card Brown
- Card N Egg
- Cotton N Card
- Carefresh (paper bedding, super soft and low-dust)
Please note: Avoid sawdust or wood shavings – these are often too dusty for Guinea Pigs.
What is the difference between guinea pig litter and bedding?
- Toilet filling (such as Cotton N Pellets): coarser, super absorbent, for the toilet
- Bedding (such as Cotton N Cotton): soft, warm, for the entire stay
A combination of both works ideally: a soft layer in the enclosure + pellets in the toilet.
What is the most beneficial bedding for guinea pigs?
Bulk packaging is cheaper per litre. Some budget-friendly choices:
- Card N Card Mix – 100L
- Cotton N Fibre/Card – 100L
- Cotton N Pellets – 20 or 40L
These stay fresh for a long time, so you don't have to change them as often.
How thick should the ground cover layer be?
A good layer is:
- 3 to 5 cm thick in the enclosure
- In the toilet a little more (for pellets: 2–3 cm is enough)
This way the enclosure remains dry and your guinea pigs have a soft place to lie.
Can ground cover go in the compost bin?
Many ground covers made from natural materials are biodegradable , such as:
- Cotton
- Hemp
- Cardboard fiber
- Coconut fiber
What substrate is suitable for baby guinea pigs?
For young guinea pigs it is important that the substrate:
- Dust free is
- Not edible in large quantities
- Soft and warm is
Recommendations:
- Cotton N Cotton
- Carefresh
- Card N Egg in toilet bowl
