Product description

Beaphar Care+ Timothy Hay 1 kg for Rabbits, Guinea Pigs and Rodents

Beaphar Care+ Timothy Hay is a fiber-rich hay variety for animals that require hay daily, such as rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and degus. Timothy hay is known for its firm structure, high crude fiber content, and favorable calcium-phosphorus ratio. As a result, this hay fits well into a conscious daily care routine where fiber, chewing activity, and an appropriate nutritional basis are important.

For small rodents such as mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils, hay plays a different role. They use hay primarily as natural nesting material, foraging material, or as a loose layer in a hamsterscaping or gerbilscaping enclosure. This adds more structure to the enclosure and makes the setup feel more natural.

Why choose Beaphar Care+ Timothy Hay?

Timothy hay is a popular type of hay because it is well-suited to animals that require a lot of fiber. Rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and degus eat hay daily as an important part of their care. The fiber-rich structure stimulates natural chewing behavior and helps maintain daily fiber intake.

Beaphar Care+ Timothy Hay contains 32% crude fiber and has a low calcium content of approximately 0.5%. This makes this hay a great choice for owners who are mindful of the type of hay they offer. When it comes to hay, DRD looks not only at the packaging, but especially at its practical role in daily care: does your animal enjoy eating it, does it have sufficient texture, and is it suitable for the species?

We store our hay in a dark and cool place.

At DRD Knaagdierwinkel®, we store hay in a dark, cool place and out of direct sunlight. We do this intentionally, because light, heat, and UV radiation can affect smell, color, and quality. By storing the hay neatly and protected, it remains in the best possible condition until it arrives at your home.

At home, it is best to store hay in a dry, cool, and airy place. Do not seal it completely airtight if residual moisture or temperature fluctuations may still be present, but ensure that it remains protected from moisture, sunlight, and strong odors.

How do you administer Beaphar Care+ Timothy Hay?

For rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and degus, hay should be made readily available daily. Place the hay in a hay rack, hay bag, or a clean hay corner. This keeps it fresh longer and prevents it from being trampled or soiled as quickly. Many animals eat hay better when you offer several small portions per day instead of one large pile that sits there all day.

For small rodents, you can mix a small handful of hay into the bedding, offer it as nesting material, or use it as a natural layer in the enclosure. Especially in hamsterscaping and gerbilscaping, hay can help create layers, tunnels, and natural transitions.

For which animals is Beaphar Care+ Timothy Hay suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable as natural nesting material, foraging material, and airy structure in the enclosure. Mice do not eat hay as their main food source, but they can drag it around, sniff it, and nest in it.
  • Dwarf hamster: suitable as natural nesting and landscaping material. Mix a small amount into the bedding or use it as a layer in a natural setup.
  • Hamster: suitable for hamsterscaping, nest building, and as extra structure in deep bedding. Hay can help make the layers in the enclosure look more natural.
  • Gerbil: suitable as gnawing, nesting, and building material. Gerbils like to incorporate hay into their tunnels and nest structures.
  • Dwarf rat: hay is not a daily fiber staple for dwarf rats. Preferably use low-dust bedding, tunnels, foraging material, and suitable Ratscaping materials. A small decorative touch is only acceptable if your animal responds well to it and the hay is not dusty.
  • Rat: Hay is not a clear basic daily care requirement for rats. Rats have sensitive airways, making low-dust materials more important. For rats, we prefer suitable bedding, digging boxes, tunnels, hammocks, foraging toys, and Ratscaping .
  • Guinea pig: very suitable as a daily fiber base. Guinea pigs need plenty of hay every day, in addition to suitable guinea pig food and fresh vegetables.
  • Rabbit: very suitable as a daily hay base. Rabbits should have access to clean and attractive hay throughout the day.
  • Chinchilla: suitable as an important source of fiber within a frugal, high-fiber diet. Offer hay daily in a clean hay rack or hay corner.
  • Degu: suitable as a daily source of fiber. Degus benefit from a fiber-rich, simple diet with good hay as an important component.

Use for hamsterscaping and gerbilscaping

Timothy hay can be beautifully used in a natural setup. You can mix it with bedding, lay it as a thin layer between different substrate layers, or use it around tunnels, houses, and natural hiding places. The different color and texture give the enclosure more depth and a more natural appearance.

For small animals, it is better to use small tufts at a time. Always check that the hay is clean, dry, and not dusty. You can shorten long, stiff blades slightly before incorporating them into the enclosure.

Composition and analysis

Composition: Timothy hay.

Analysis: crude fiber 32%.

Timothy hay is naturally rich in fiber. Its firm structure makes it suitable for prolonged nibbling, thus supporting the natural eating and chewing behavior of animals that require hay daily.

Usage & consumption

How long 1 kg of hay lasts depends on the animal species, the number of animals, their appetite, and how much hay is used as food, nesting material, or landscaping material. For rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and degus, hay is a daily consumption product. For small rodents, you usually use smaller quantities, as it primarily serves as nesting, foraging, or enclosure material.

Usage situation Consumption
Rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and degus Offer a generous amount daily; consumption depends on the number of animals and eating behavior.
Mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters and gerbils Small tufts as nesting, scaving, or foraging material

Good to know

Hay is a natural product. Color, smell, texture, and blade length may vary slightly from harvest to harvest. This is normal and characteristic of natural hay. Always check hay for freshness before offering it and remove any hay that has become wet, musty, or soiled.

We do not recommend hay as a standard care product for rats, as fine dust can irritate the respiratory system. For rats, it is better to choose low-dust bedding, a suitable digging box, tunnels, foraging toys, and natural furnishings that are better suited to rats.

Ik kocht dit hooi altijd bij de dierenwinkel, helaas was het uit het assortiment gehaald. We hebben toen een tijdje ander hooi geprobeerd, maar deze bevalt tot nu toe het beste.
