Mites are very small and virtually invisible to the naked eye. There are different types of mites, one type of mite causes more discomfort than the other. The complaints of your rabbit, guinea pig or other rodent are therefore also related to the type of mite that the animal is suffering from.
Your pet can suffer from mites through contact with them in the hay or straw. Wild birds, rats and mice can also spread mites. Mites can also easily be passed on by infected animals. They also hide in the ground cover and cracks and seams of the cage. So good hygiene of your rabbit, guinea pig or hamster's enclosure is also very important to prevent mites. Did you know that some mites on your pet are even contagious to humans?
Scabies mite
Scabies is common in guinea pigs and other rodents. Scabies is caused by a mite that literally burrows into the skin. This really causes a lot of discomfort for your guinea pig or rodent:
- Extreme itching, which can even cause a seizure
- Lots of scratching and biting
- Loss of coat and bald spots
- Unexpected jumps
- Scabs, possibly resulting in bacterial infections
- Wounds often start around the lips and nose, later covering the rest of the body
- Losing weight and less appetite
If your pet suffers from scabies, be alert to your own skin. Scabies is also contagious to humans.
Fur mite
The Cheyletiella is the 'fur mite'. This mite species causes little or no itching. In general, this mite is not very contagious to humans, but it could possibly cause mild skin inflammation in humans. You can recognize an infection in your rabbit, guinea pig or other rodent by the following symptoms:
- Flakes in the coat/dandruff
- Loose hair
- Bald spots
- Possibly dark spots on the hair
- No or very mild itching
The fur mite is best determined by combing with a very fine comb (for example a flea comb) and then examining it under a microscope. In the case of an infestation with fur mites, the mites and eggs are visible.
You can tackle both fur mites and scabies mites with Beaphar Anti-Scabies for rabbits and guinea pigs. You use this effective spray against the direction of the hair, so that the liquid reaches the skin. Repeat the treatment after 1 week. You can treat smaller rodents with Beaphar Anti-Parasite . A handy squeeze pipette that you administer into the animal's neck. This pipette is effective for 4 weeks.
- Keep infected animals separated from others, because mites are highly contagious
- Treat all rodents to prevent reinfestation
- Also ensure good hygiene. Once a week, remove the entire ground cover and clean the enclosure thoroughly with, for example, Beaphar Multi Cleaner
- Also treat the stay with Mite Blocker Combi ; a product without insecticides and very effective against mites
- Also consider cleaning/replacing toys and houses in the enclosure, especially in the seams and cracks of wooden toys/houses where mites can reside and keep re-infecting your animal.
With these tips, your guinea pig, rabbit, hamster or other small rodent will quickly be in great shape again! Of course, mites are not the only cause that can cause changes to the skin and coat. Mold and lice can also be the cause of this.
Lice are larger than mites and therefore visible in the coat with good eyesight or a magnifying glass. They are gray and a few millimeters in size. They move a lot slower than, for example, fleas. If your rabbit, guinea pig, hamster or other small rodent has lice, you don't have to worry that you will suffer from them yourself. Lice from animals do not pass to humans. If you keep several (types of) rodents together, it is wise to treat them all.
Lice in rodents and rabbits do not drink blood. Lice walk on the skin and hair and feed on dander. They lay their eggs on the hair, which we call nits. You can recognize lice in your rabbit or rodent as follows:
- Rougher, bristly coat
- Flakes in the coat
- Usually no itching
- Sometimes the animal behaves restlessly
- White dots (nits) in the coat, visible with good eyes/lens
- Later stage: bald spots/scabs
You can easily and effectively combat lice in rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and other small rodents with Beaphar Anti-Parasite. Choose the variant that is tailored to the weight of your pet and read the package leaflet for the dosage. You administer this squeeze pipette into the neck of your animal and it works for four weeks. In the meantime, it is important to also apply the tips below so that your animal does not become infected again after these four weeks.
Other tips:
- It is wise to treat all your rodents and rabbits, even if they do not appear to have lice. This way you prevent reinfection as best as possible.
- Good hygiene of the accommodation is also very important. Clean the enclosure thoroughly with Beaphar Multi Cleaner and replace the floor covering at least once a week.
- You can also treat the enclosure with Mite Blocker Combi. This product does not contain insecticides and is very effective against lice.
- Don't forget to clean/replace toys and houses in the enclosure, especially in the seams and cracks of wooden toys/houses, lice can live and infect your rabbit or rodent again and again.
Your rabbit, guinea pig, hamster or other small rodent can infect itself with worms by eating a worm egg. Animals that sit outside or eat green food from outside have an increased risk of worms. Animals can also infect each other with a worm infection.
The egg ends up in your animal's body. That's where the worm comes out and the worms multiply. At first you won't notice much of this in your animal. But you can still look for certain symptoms to recognize worms in rabbits and rodents.
Worms are not always visible in the feces of rabbits and rodents. Sometimes you can see worms in the stool, but it is better to be alert to the following symptoms of a worm infestation:
- Changing stools (e.g. slimy, diarrhea, abnormal size of the stools)
- Rougher/upright coat
- Slimming
- Decreased appetite
- Swollen abdomen
Tip: If you are losing weight and have reduced appetite, be sure to check your pet's teeth and contact your vet.
To combat roundworms and whipworms in rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters or other rodents, use Beaphar Anti-Parasite . This product also works against mites and lice in your pet. You simply administer it to the neck with a squeeze pipette. This way your pet cannot lick the liquid. The product is effective for four weeks.
- Does your rabbit, guinea pig, hamster or other small rodent suffer from worms? Then treat all rodents. Worms are transmissible and only visible at a late stage. This way you prevent reinfection.
- In addition, keep the cage clean with Beaphar Multi Cleaner and replace the bedding at least once a week. Are you also thinking about cleaning houses, food bowls and other materials in your animal's enclosure?

Goed product!
