The hay rack has horizontal bars on two sides, allowing the animals to choose their own height at which they want to eat and the hay is offered in doses. On the side of the hay rack there is also room to nibble and that gives the animals extra space to eat their hay. This way the animals can approach the hay rack of squares and thus have more space to eat. This is especially nice for group animals because they don't have to wait for each other and they don't have to argue about the best spot. It is important to place the hay rack in the middle of the enclosure so that the animals can actually access it from all sides.

What is a good bar spacing for a hay rack?

A good quality hay rack should be designed so that rodents can fit their snout between the bars, but not their entire head. The suitable bar spacing depends on the animal species and the size of the animal. In general, the following distances are recommended:

Guinea pigs: about 3 cm
Degus: about 2.5 to 3 cm
Chinchillas: about 2.5 to 3 cm
Dwarf rabbits: about 3 to 3.5 cm
Medium rabbits: up to about 4 cm
Large rabbits: up to about 4.5 cm

It is very important that the animals cannot put their heads through the bars, otherwise they could become trapped. This is different if the bars are very far apart and the animals can move their heads back and forth with ease. If you notice that your rodent's head just fits through the bars and could possibly become trapped, it is advisable to remove the hay rack from the enclosure and choose one with a smaller bar spacing.
