Product description

Mealberry Little One Rat Food 900 grams

Mealberry Little One Rat Food is a complete food for pet rats and dwarf rats. The mix combines grains, flakes, pellets, puffed ingredients, seeds, FOS, and yucca extract. As a result, rats receive a varied daily base with different textures to grab, search, sort, and nibble on.

At DRD, when it comes to rat food, we focus primarily on composition, texture, group use, and how easily the food fits into the daily routine. Rats are curious omnivores who enjoy exploring and foraging. Therefore, Little One Rat Food is suitable not only for the food bowl but also for scattering or hiding in a foraging area or Ratscaping setup.

Why choose Little One Rat Food?

Rats are smart, active animals that enjoy foraging for food. A mix with different textures suits this well. Little One Rat Food contains, among other things, wheat, barley flakes, hulled oats, multigrain pellets, puffed wheat, red corn, corn flakes, pea flakes, carob, sweet lupine flakes, puffed corn, dried banana, buckwheat, sunflower seeds, and bean flakes.

The combination of flakes, pellets, puffed parts, and seeds creates a diet with plenty of variety in the food bowl. This is pleasant for rats, who like to grab with their paws, carry pieces, and eat in different places.

Because this food contains no added animal ingredients, you can specifically offer animal protein as a snack. Think, for example, of dried insects, an insect mix, or other suitable protein-rich snacks. You can easily order these along with your food via our category of animal proteins for rodents . This way, you keep a clear overview of both the basic diet and the extras you give alongside the food.

For which animals is this food suitable?

  • Dwarf rat: suitable as a complete daily diet for dwarf rats. Dwarf rats can be smaller than regular pet rats, so adjust the portion according to size, activity level, and any leftovers.
  • Rat: suitable as a complete daily diet for pet rats. Because rats are social animals and should be kept with other rats, we calculate the consumption indication below based on 2 rats.

This food has been developed for rats and pygmy rats. For mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus, you should preferably choose a food specifically formulated for those animal species.

Feeding & use

Mealberry recommends approximately 20–30 grams of Little One Rat Food per rat per day. The exact amount depends on size, age, activity, group size, condition, and what else you offer. For dwarf rats, the practical amount is often closer to the lower end of the guideline, but always observe your own animals closely.

  • Give as a daily basic diet for pet rats and dwarf rats.
  • As a guideline, calculate with approximately 20–30 grams per rat per day.
  • Preferably only refill when most parts have been eaten.
  • Use a portion in the food bowl and a small portion as scatter feed.
  • Scatter only in a clean, dry spot or in a foraging zone.
  • Combine with suitable vegetables, herbs, snacks, and optionally animal proteins.
  • Store the food in a cool, dry, and tightly sealed place.
Usage How to offer it? Good to know
Daily diet Put in a food bowl and only refill when the mix has been completely eaten. This way, you keep better track of intake and selective eating.
Foraging Scatter a small amount in a dry spot or hide it in a foraging zone. This is how you turn part of the meal into a natural search moment.
Ratscaping Hide small portions in digging boxes, food puzzles, or among safe materials. Rats often find searching, catching, and picking out at least as much fun as the food itself.

How long does this bag last?

Rats are social animals and should be kept with other rats. Therefore, we calculate below based on 2 rats. The indication is based on the Mealberry feeding recommendation: 20–30 grams per rat per day, so 40–60 grams per day for 2 rats in total.

Daily portion per rat Daily portion for 2 rats together About 900 grams lasts
20 g per rat 40 g per day together approx. 22–23 days
30 g per rat 60 g per day together approx. 15 days

Calculation aid: 900 grams ÷ total daily portion for 2 rats = number of days. Actual consumption depends on size, age, activity, group size, feeding method, and how much, if any, is left over.

Compound

Wheat, barley flakes, hulled oats, multigrain pellets, puffed wheat, barley, red corn, oats, corn flakes, pea flakes, carob, sweet lupine flakes, puffed corn, dried banana, buckwheat, sunflower seeds, bean flakes, fructo-oligosaccharides, yucca extract.

This composition is suitable for rats that enjoy exploring different textures. The grains, flakes, pellets, and puffed parts together form a varied base, while carob, dried banana, buckwheat, sunflower seeds, and bean flakes provide extra aroma, flavor, and variety. FOS and yucca extract further complement the recipe.

Analysis

Protein 12.2%, fat 4.1%, fiber 4.3%, ash 7%, calcium 0.9%, phosphorus 0.6%, vitamin A 8775 IU, vitamin D3 936 IU, vitamin E 58.5 mg, biotin 175.5 mcg, copper sulphate(II) 2.93 mg, zinc sulphate 29.3 mg, potassium iodide 1.17 mg.

This analysis is consistent with a complete rat diet with a varied base of grains, flakes, pellets, and seeds. The food is intended as a daily base; extras such as vegetables, herbs, snacks, or animal proteins can be offered consciously and in appropriate quantities alongside this base.

Switching to Little One Rat Food

Switch gradually when changing food. Mix the new food with the old food for the first few days and gradually increase the proportion of Little One Rat Food. This allows your rats to get used to the new scent, taste, and mix texture.

  • Day 1–2: mix a small amount of new food with the old food.
  • Days 3–5: feed approximately half old, half new.
  • Days 6–7: mainly new food with a small amount of old food remaining.
  • Then switch completely when your rats continue to eat well and the droppings remain normal.

Good to know

Little One Rat Food is at its best in an actively designed rat enclosure with climbing opportunities, tunnels, digging boxes, hammocks, platforms, and foraging areas. Precisely because this mix contains various components, you can use it effectively to stimulate natural foraging behavior.

  • Check regularly whether the entire mix is being eaten properly.
  • Use a small portion as scatter feed to encourage foraging.
  • Consciously offer extras alongside the basic diet.
  • You can give animal proteins separately as a suitable snack.
  • Store the packaging in a dry, cool, and tightly sealed place.
  • Check the smell, color, and texture before offering the food.
  • For social rats, create multiple feeding or foraging spots if activity develops around the food.

Mijn ratten doen het er goed op. Ik geef er nog wel ander voer doorheen. Ze vinden het lekker en tot nu toe gezond gebleven, misschien toeval maar ik vind het reden genoeg om zo door te gaan
