Order a home for your Hamster quickly and easily at DRD Rodent Shop ® The Hamster Webshop for your Hamster!
Welcome to DRD Rodent Shop®, the place where you can easily and quickly order a home for your hamster! We understand how important it is for a hamster to have a spacious and suitable home where he can show his natural behavior. That is why we have a wide range of terrariums especially for hamsters to choose from.
What is the minimum size for a hamster cage?
Well, space is key! It is always better to have a slightly larger enclosure than one that is too small. With all our cages, you will find specific information about which hamster species is suitable for that particular cage. If we indicate "Hamster", then the cage is suitable for both dwarf hamsters and Syrian hamsters (also known as golden hamsters). As a guideline, we recommend a minimum size of 70 x 50 cm for dwarf hamsters and 100 x 50 cm for Syrian hamsters (source: LICG). But remember, bigger is always better for the animals' well-being!
For dwarf hamsters this means a minimum of 3500 cm² (70 x 50 cm) of ground surface and for Syrian hamsters a minimum of 5000 cm² (100 x 50 cm) . These are guidelines, but the ground surface is essential. The enclosure can therefore vary in size as long as the ground surface complies with the recommended dimensions.
For the well-being of your hamster, minimum dimensions are important:
- Dwarf hamsters : minimum 70 × 50 cm (3,500 cm²)
- Syrian hamsters (golden hamsters) : minimum 100 × 50 cm (5,000 cm²)
Bigger is always better! A spacious enclosure allows your hamster to dig, run and display natural behaviour.
What makes a habitat really suitable for a hamster?
A good stay:
- Is spacious enough for digging and movement
- Has sufficient ventilation
- Keeps bedding neat inside
- Is safe, stable and hamster-proof
- Connect with the natural lifestyle of the species
All accommodations in our webshop have been carefully selected for suitability and comfort .
What is better: a cage or a glass terrarium?
A terrarium has many advantages:
- No draught thanks to smart ventilation
- Dust-free and hygienic
- Deep enough for a thick layer of bedding (20–30 cm!)
- Keep your interior tidy and visible
Our most popular models such as the Black Scape combine a sleek design with excellent air circulation .
Why is ventilation so important?
Good ventilation:
- Prevents respiratory problems
- Keeps the accommodation dry and fresh
- Minimizes odors
- Reduces risk of parasites
Our terrariums are equipped with double grids (top and front) for safe convection ventilation – without draughts!
How deep can I apply ground cover?
Our accommodations offer space for:
- Minimum 20 cm (standard for dwarf hamsters)
- Up to 30–40 cm in larger models
Perfect for building tunnels and stimulating natural instincts!
Are your enclosures suitable for all hamsters?
Yes, we always make it clear whether a stay is suitable for:
- Dwarf hamsters (such as the Russian dwarf hamster)
- Syrian hamsters (also known as golden hamsters)
Does it say “for dwarf hamsters”? Then it is not suitable for Syrian hamsters. If it says “for hamsters” it is suitable for both species.
Can I have the accommodation completely furnished?
Definitely! We are happy to help you with a fully furnished set , tailored to:
- The dimensions of the accommodation
- The hamster species
- Your wishes regarding furnishings (houses, tunnels, exercise wheels, feeding places)
This way you give your hamster a safe and stimulating start right away.
How are the accommodations delivered?
Glass enclosures are carefully packed and delivered via pallet transport . Expect a delivery time of 2-3 working days. In case of damage, we will solve it properly - please call or email us.
I don't know which accommodation to choose. Can you help?

The Importance of Air Circulation in Terrariums
Air circulation in terrariums is vital for the well-being of small rodents. It affects air quality, humidity, temperature and helps to minimize odors. It is not only important for the comfort of the animals, but it also plays a crucial role in preventing health problems. Good air circulation can help you reduce the risk of respiratory infections and prevent parasites, such as mites and lice.
How the Air Circulation System Works
The Black Scape terrarium is designed with optimum air circulation in mind. Here is a detailed explanation of how this system works in practice:
- Air Vent on the Top
A striking feature of our terrariums is the air vent that extends over the entire length of the top. This vent acts as the outlet for warm air in the terrarium. Warm air tends to rise, and this vent provides an outlet for that warm air. It allows the warmed air to escape, preventing the climate in the terrarium from becoming too warm.
- Protected Front Grille
At the front of the terrarium is another grille that also covers the entire length. This grille acts as the inlet point for fresh air from outside the terrarium. What is essential here is that this grille is protected with a gnaw-proof profile, so that your pets cannot damage it.
- Natural Convection
The ventilation system uses the principle of natural convection. This means that warm air rises while cold air sinks. This phenomenon is known as thermosiphon. The warm air in the terrarium rises to the upper grille at the top of the terrarium.
- Air circulation
This natural thermosiphon circulation principle creates a continuous air circulation. This means that the warm, used air in the terrarium is discharged through the upper grille, while fresh air is drawn in from outside through the low, rodent-proof grille at the front. This creates a continuous air exchange, bringing fresh air into the terrarium and removing used air.
The Benefits of Our Ventilation System
Our ventilation system offers numerous advantages, not only for the inhabitants of the terrarium, but also for yourself:
-
Healthy Air Quality : The constant air circulation ensures healthy air quality in the terrarium, which significantly reduces the risk of respiratory infections.
-
Minimizing Odors : It prevents odors from building up, keeping the indoor environment fresh and pleasant.
-
Preventing Parasites : Thanks to effective air circulation, humidity is reduced, which significantly reduces the chance of pests such as parasites, mites, lice and the like. These pests thrive in a humid environment.
-
Temperature Control : The ventilation system also helps regulate the temperature in the terrarium, preventing overheating.
Single Top Grille vs. Double Top and Bottom Grille
A question that often comes up is whether a single top grille that covers the entire top is better than a system with two grilles, namely both a top and a bottom grille. Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages.
A single top grille can provide maximum air circulation, but this is often accompanied by less suction power. This is because air circulation in a closed space is driven by natural convection, where warm air rises and cold air sinks. In the case of a single top grille, air circulation cannot be sufficiently stimulated.
A system with two grilles, namely an upper and lower grille, provides a more controlled and efficient air circulation. The air circulation is stimulated by the natural movement of warm and cold air, with the lower opening providing the intake of cool air and the upper grille removing the warm air.
The choice between these systems depends on your specific needs and priorities. If your priority is maximum airflow and adequate protection against escape or gnawing, a single top grille may be beneficial. If safety and control over airflow are more important, a dual grille system may be preferable.
