Chinchillas sleep during the day. It is therefore important that they have their own sleeping place. Because Chinchillas are group animals and like to sleep together, it is useful that the house is large enough for the group or at least for two chinchillas. In addition, the animals need a house to retreat to. In addition to a sleeping place, a house also gives the Chinchilla an extra sense of security. We understand this need! That is why we offer you a wide choice of many suitable houses for chinchillas!

Should I get a home for a chinchilla or not?

Although chinchillas do not sleep in a burrow in the wild, they like to hide between the rock crevices and they like to sit sheltered. As soon as chinchillas get their own house, they will like to sleep in it. It also shields the animals from any commotion from outside. The animals sleep during the day, which gives them extra rest in a sleeping house.

How big should the chinchilla house be?

The size of the house depends on the size of the group and the personal preferences of the animals. Do they like to sleep together? Then a larger house is recommended, so that the animals can sleep together cozily. If some group members prefer to be alone, then a small house is also possible where only one individual can fit in. With the latter option, it is better to have several small houses so that the animals do not fight over them. Each group should have at least one larger house where they can sleep together.

Which material to choose?

Chinchillas are real gnawers. The most ideal is therefore a gnawing-proof house. An example of a gnawing-proof house is an aluminium house. The chinchillas will not be able to gnaw these to pieces and therefore a gnawing-proof house will last by far the longest. Wooden houses are also very popular. However, wood has the major disadvantage that the chinchillas can gnaw it to pieces. That is why it is important to always offer sufficient alternative gnawing material/gnawing wood. Some caution is also required with houses with nails or staples. These items must be checked daily. When the chinchilla has gnawed so much that a nail or staple is almost exposed, the house must be replaced. We also have nail-free wooden houses. These are gnawing-proof, but will still last less long than a gnawing-proof plateau. In addition, there are also gnawing houses. These are intended for gnawing! Of course, the gnawing houses last the least.

How can you prevent gnawing on a house?

Chinchillas love gnawing material, the more the better and preferably of natural origin. Branches of apple, willow, birch, Jerusalem artichoke etc. are very popular, but also help to prevent problem gnawing. If animals have too little gnawing material or gnawing material that they are not satisfied with, they can start gnawing at their house. Therefore, give the animals enough gnawing material and distraction so that they do not attack their house. If all this does not help, an aluminum house is a solution.
