Parakeets are not only beautiful to look at, but also extremely intelligent! These birds need a challenge and sufficient attention (of their own kind). Parakeets can also be trained with a lot of patience and love, for example to sit on the hand.
Mental care
The mental care of the Parakeets mainly consists of providing sufficient attention in the form of a conspecific. According to them, these are truly social group animals and prefer to have a friend of their own kind for company. They can also show their natural social behavior with a friend. A fake bird or a mirror is not a substitute for a fellow bird.
Flying freely around the room
Birds love flying, so it would be a shame if the animals were allowed to fly around freely every now and then, for example in the room. It is very important that the room is safe to fly around in. Be sure to cover the windows with something in the beginning so that the birds do not fly into them. The animals do not see that it is a window and think they can fly through it with all the consequences that entails. Other pets also have to make room for the bird in the room, because no matter how sweet the dog or cat is, instinctive behavior is always lurking and a fluttering bird can trigger the dog or cat to grab.
Because the birds can settle anywhere, it is also important to examine the houseplants. Are they not poisonous to the birds? If so, put them away for now.
Natural wood in the accommodation
The birds will of course particularly appreciate materials and branches! Branches of apple, pear, willow, grape or fig are highly recommended. The branches must be clean and unsprayed.
Daily work around the Parakeet
It is important to change food and water for the animals daily. In the case of seeds, the empty seed pods must be removed and the bath must also be cleaned daily. Check the enclosure for perishable food remains, remove feces and wet spots.
For good hygiene, it is important to clean the perches regularly (once a week) and also to change the ground cover.
The Moulting of the Parakeet
Parakeets can molt several times a year. They lose their old feathers and they are not replaced. However, it is not the case that all feathers go at the same time and bald spots occur, the process is gradual. The new feathers can be recognized as white spines that protrude between the parent feathers. Moulting costs the animals a lot of energy. You therefore often notice that the birds are calmer during the moult, but also appear a bit grumpy and irritated. It is important to give the birds sufficient rest and rich nutrition during the moulting period.
