Exercise Wheels for Gerbils – Let's Run!
Gerbils are real energy bombs! They are naturally active, curious and always on the move. A good exercise wheel helps them get rid of that energy and offers valuable enrichment for their habitat. But not every wheel is suitable for gerbils. We are happy to help you choose the right wheel!
What is the best exercise wheel material for Gerbils?
Gerbils are real rodents as we know, they will like to gnaw on parts of their enclosure. To prevent this we always recommend sufficient gnawing material, but unfortunately it is not possible to completely prevent this with these little rascals. In order to make the enclosure as safe as possible for the Gerbils, it is of course important that the exercise wheel is also safe. We believe that a plastic exercise wheel is not safe for Gerbils. The animals can gnaw on a plastic exercise wheel and hurt themselves on possible splinters. Gerbils prefer wooden exercise wheels. The animals can nibble on them a little if they want without it doing any harm. A wooden exercise wheel will have to be replaced regularly, if we prefer not to do this, a metal exercise wheel can be recommended, for example an aluminum exercise wheel . These last a lifetime, are safe and are 100% gnaw-proof!
Which exercise wheel is suitable for gerbils?
When choosing an exercise wheel for your gerbil, it is important to pay attention to a few things:
- The right size: For gerbils we recommend a running wheel with a diameter of at least 28 cm. This prevents back strain while running.
- A closed tread: A smooth or cork-covered tread without openings prevents legs from getting caught.
- Quiet in use: Gerbils like to run – even at night. A quiet running wheel is therefore very pleasant for everyone in the house!
Which exercise wheels are unsafe for Gerbils?
It is important to keep in mind that Gerbils are social animals. Even if they do not all fit in an exercise wheel at the same time, they will try. It is therefore important that exercise wheels for Gerbils are completely open at the front. An exercise wheel with a bar at the front that rotates or a partition in front can cause serious injuries if they come up against an animal. This can happen if one animal is running in the exercise wheel and another animal wants to get in. Fortunately, we do not have such exercise wheels for Gerbils. All exercise wheels mentioned in this category are safe for Gerbils.
For solo or in a group?
Gerbils live in groups, but they prefer to run individually. Therefore, if you have multiple gerbils, make sure there are multiple wheels or enough other distractions, so that there is no fight over the wheel.
How to Clean a Wooden Gerbil Exercise Wheel?
It used to be a challenge to clean a wooden exercise wheel, but fortunately that is a thing of the past. Nowadays, there are two types of cleaning products that can be used to easily clean wooden exercise wheels. A urine spray can help with this. This breaks down urine.
Can you wash Gerbil exercise wheels in water?
No! For all running wheels it is not good to rinse them completely under the tap. It is very important that the turning mechanism (ball bearing) does not get wet. The more often the turning mechanism is rinsed the stiffer it becomes. This can cause it to squeak sooner and run stiffer.
We do not recommend washing wooden running wheels with water. Wiping them with a damp cloth is no problem, but it is not good for the running wheels to get them completely wet. Wetting the running wheel can cause the glue to come loose.
What to do when a running wheel squeaks?
A running wheel can make more noise over time. For a squeaky running wheel, we recommend a drop of olive oil. This can be applied to the turning mechanism.
