Gerbil Summer Products – Smart Cooling for Hot Days (Without the Hassle)
Gerbils are native to dry regions, but that doesn't mean heat in the house isn't a problem. In the wild, they seek refuge by digging deeper tunnels and avoiding heat. In an enclosure, this is limited – that's why good summer products help you make the gerbilarium more comfortable: a cool place to lie down , a cool hiding place , and furnishings that retain less heat.
In this category, you'll find cooling products suitable for gerbils: sturdy, practical, and selected for safe use in an active burrowing habitat. DRD Rodent Shop ® – specialist in rodents and rabbits since 2011.
Provide a permanent “chill zone” with a cooling stone or cooling plate – ideal if your gerbil needs to cool down.

When do gerbils need cooling?
Keep a close eye on your gerbils when the temperature in your home approaches 25°C or higher. Signs of overheating can include: lying down more often on a platform/cool spot, being less active, or clearly seeking out the coolest corner of their enclosure. Prevention is truly better than "fixing it later."
Which gerbil summer products can you find in this category?
- Cooling stones & cooling plates – a cool surface for your gerbil to lie on/next to.
- Ceramic and terracotta shelters – often stay fresh longer than wood; ideal as a summer house.
- Cool materials for furnishing – think of sturdy shelves or components that retain less heat.
- Graafhoek products (such as sand/humus mixes) – great for encouraging natural "tunnel thinking", as long as you keep it dry and airy.
Practical cooling tips for your gerbil cage or gerbilarium
- Place the enclosure out of direct sunlight (even sunshine through glass can heat up quickly).
- Create shade and always offer at least one cool shelter (ceramic/terracotta).
- Use a cooling stone/cooling plate as a “choice spot”: your gerbil decides when to lie down on it.
- Check the water extra carefully: it's clean, fresh, and provided at a stable level. (See also: water bottles & water bowls .)
- Leave enough digging space : gerbils like to regulate their own “microclimate” in the enclosure.
Tip: Combine summer products with a smart base such as gerbil bedding (deep enough for digging) and provide enrichment so that your gerbils don't start nibbling on parts out of boredom.
Maintenance – fresh, dry and hygienic
Clean cooling stones/cooling plates regularly and dry them thoroughly before returning them to the enclosure. Check daily for any substrate or debris adhering to them. For drinking systems, refresh the water daily and clean it more thoroughly weekly. This way, cooling remains truly enjoyable.
Checklist – Keeping Gerbils Cool in Summer
✔ Stay out of the sun and not in a stuffy corner
✔ At least one cool place to lie down (cooling stone/cooling plate)
✔ At least one cool hiding place (ceramic/terracotta)
✔ Fresh water daily + drinking point stably placed
✔ Keep cool products clean, dry and free of ground cover
✔ Check behavior in hot weather (lying down, lethargy, "coolest place")
Safety
Always offer cooling as a choice (don't force it): provide a cooling area so your gerbil can switch between warm and cool. Never place cooling products in direct sunlight. If you notice significant lethargy, unusual behavior, or are unsure, consult a veterinarian.
FAQ – Gerbil Summer Products
At what temperature should I pay extra attention?
From about 25°C it is wise to observe gerbils extra and provide cooling (cool lying place + cool hiding place).
What usually works best: cooling stone or ceramic house?
Ideally, both: a cooling stone/cooling plate as a spot to lie down and ceramic/terracotta as a cool hiding place. This way, your gerbil can choose what feels comfortable at the moment.
Can I simply place a cooling product on the ground cover?
For gerbils it is often wiser to place cooling products on a stable surface (e.g. a tray), because otherwise they can be undermined.
