Gerbil platform and ladder in the gerbil webshop

You can easily and quickly order Gerbil platforms & bridges at DRD Rodent Shop ® The Gerbil Webshop for your Gerbil!

gerbil trays Gerbils are excellent climbers, jumpers and runners. In addition to a spacious Gerbil cage with sufficient ground cover , platforms and ladders can enrich the habitat for the animals. Because Gerbils are real diggers, they often stir the ground cover in all directions! A platform can then come in handy to place the sandbox or food bowl on.

Why are platforms and ladders important for gerbils?

Gerbils are curious and active animals that love to climb, dig and explore. Platforms and ladders add an extra dimension to their living space, stimulate natural behaviour and help prevent boredom. They provide variety in the enclosure and can be used as a lookout post, resting place or passage to other parts of the cage.

Do Gerbils Need a Tray?

Yes, we are of the opinion that Gerbils really need a plateau. They are real diggers that dig up the ground cover completely every day :) A plateau can offer a solution and be a stable place for a food bowl or a sandbox, for example.

We believe that Gerbils benefit from the use of a platform. These curious rodents are known for their digging behavior, where they completely dig up the substrate on a daily basis. A platform can provide an ideal solution by creating a stable and elevated place for various accessories such as a food bowl or a sandbox. Discover here why using a platform can be a valuable addition to your Gerbils' habitat!"

Which platforms are suitable for Gerbils?

For the Gerbils we have selected platforms that are also really suitable for the animals. These are platforms made of wood or aluminum. We have deliberately left out plastic platforms, because these are quickly gnawed to pieces by the animals.

We have carefully selected trays that are specifically suitable for Gerbils. We offer a choice of wooden and aluminium trays, both of which meet the needs of these active rodents. No plastic because that does not last. We have deliberately avoided plastic trays, as Gerbils can quickly gnaw through them, resulting in damage.

What material are the platforms and ladders made of?

Most platforms and ladders are made of untreated wood , such as willow or birch, which are safe for rodents. Plywood is generally not recommended for gerbils because it can splinter, posing a health risk. Other natural materials, such as cork or willow, are also excellent choices for a safe and cozy living environment.

How do I place or attach a platform or ladder in the enclosure?

Platforms can be attached in different ways, depending on the design:

  • With screw system on the bars
  • With support legs that rest on the bottom
  • With hooks or strings for ladders that are hung

Make sure everything is secured properly to avoid accidents, especially with busy diggers like gerbils.

Can trays also be used to place food or snacks on?

Yes! Gerbils enjoy searching for their food. You can use trays to offer:

  • Foraging mixes
  • Spices
  • Snacks or mealworms
  • Small feeding bowls

In this way you stimulate natural foraging behavior.

Do gerbils also use platforms for sleeping?

Sometimes yes! Especially if you place soft nesting material or a house on it. But most gerbils prefer to sleep in a self-dug hole under the ground cover. Plateaus are more often used as a resting place or lookout post.

Can I place multiple platforms in one enclosure?

Yes, that is exactly recommended! By placing multiple platforms in different places, you create a dynamic stay. Make sure that there is always enough walking space and digging surface under the platforms.

Do I have to change the layout regularly?

That's a good idea! Gerbils like variety. By moving the platforms, ladders and other accessories every now and then, their environment remains interesting and challenging. Be careful to implement changes gradually to prevent stress.

Which size is suitable for my stay?

This depends on the size of the enclosure and the number of gerbils. Make sure that:

  • The platform offers enough space to sit or walk on
  • The ladder has a safe slope
  • There is still plenty of room left to dig and run around

For a standard gerbil cage, platforms of 20-40 cm wide are ideal. If you want a race track, you can go towards 100 to 120 cm.

Do Gerbils Need a Ladder?

Well, not really. Gerbils are excellent climbers and jumpers who can do without a ladder. However, our "ladder" concept is broader. By ladder we actually also mean bridge and a bridge can be very useful to connect two platforms, for example. The Gerbils can then walk from one platform to the other via the bridge.

In fact, Gerbils do not have a specific need for a ladder, as they are naturally excellent climbers and jumpers. However, at DRD Rodent Shop® we understand the concept of a "ladder" more broadly. By ladder we actually also mean bridges, which can fulfill a useful function by, for example, connecting two platforms. Gerbils can then effortlessly walk from one platform to the other via the bridge.

Our bridges, also known as willow bridges, are often made of flexible willow wood. This not only provides a natural look, but also allows you to bend the bridge into different shapes. This way you can shape a willow bridge as a traditional bridge or even as a tunnel, giving your Gerbils even more fun and challenge.

Because the bridges/ladders are often made of willow (Willow bridge), they can also be bent into different shapes. For example, a Willow bridge can be bent into the shape of a bridge or even a tunnel.

Tip from us

Combine platforms with cork tunnels, wooden houses and foraging toys for a truly adventurous stay. You will see that your gerbils will make full use of it!
