Degus dig extensive tunnels in the wild where they store their winter supplies. As one of the few rodents, the Degu combines digging and climbing. Normally, rodents can either climb very well or dig very well, but the Degu is multifunctional in this and that is why we want to meet this need of the animals!
Degus are prey animals that warn each other of danger. They like to flee when they are frightened by something. It is then nice to give the animals a bit of shelter, for example in the form of tunnels. The tunnels can be placed both above and below the ground cover. Because Degus can also dig beautifully, a tunnel can be a stable underground place for the animals.
Above ground, the tunnels can be placed in a challenging way so that the animals can run through them or climb over them. Cork tunnels are very suitable for this.
Of course, Degus are real rodents who like to put their teeth in everything. A tunnel made of wood or cork can provide a solution and ensure that the animals do not gnaw on parts of the enclosure.
There are tunnels of different materials. They are available in wood, plastic, cork or grass. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages. We will tell you more about this in the article description.
